Leading academics, who will soon participate in a conference exploring what difference the Fitzgerald reforms have made to Queensland politics and government, have sharply criticised the system as it operates today. A lack of strong parliamentary checks and balances, a pervasive cynicism, and the politicisation of the system – to the point where it had lost the capacity to reform itself – were among the factors identified as undermining the reforms.
And the United Nations has reported its concern that Queensland’s detention of children in adult jails was not in line with international standards.
